Frequently asked questions

Here's everything you need to know about our classes at Young Guns Skate School. If you have any questions that we haven't covered below, please feel free to Contact Us

What happens if it's raining?

If the weather is unsafe on the day of an after school, school holiday or any group class, we may need to cancel. If a class is cancelled, parents will be notified by text message and email approximately 1.5 hours before the class start time.

Skatepark Tours will run in most weather conditions.

If a Lunchtime Skate Club is cancelled, the school will be notified of the cancellation.

Classes cancelled due to bad weather will be credited on your Enrolmy account. You will need to rebook for future classes to use this credit. See below.

How do I use credit?

If you have credit with us, an option to use this credit will appear before the point of payment when you next make a booking with us. Credit can be used at any time and towards any Young Guns booking.

I need to cancel or modify a booking

If you have made a recurring/regular after school booking, please email us to cancel the booking within the timeframe outlined below. Some bookings (excluding recurring/regular after-school bookings) can be cancelled by logging into your Enrolmy account and selecting the 'Update Booking' button.

If notice is not received within the timeframes below, credit will not be given. To give notice of non-attendance, please email info@younggunsskateschool.co.nz and include your child’s first and last name and the name of the booked activity.

Credits will be issued if notice is received before the following times:

AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES: Before 1pm on the day of the class.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY CLASSES: At least 2 hours before the class start time.

SKATEPARK TOURS: Before 8pm the night before the tour.

PRIVATE LESSONS: At least 1 hour before the lesson start time.

LUNCHTIME SKATE CLUBS: Notice is only required if a participant will miss multiple classes or discontinue attendance during the term. Notice must be provided before the missed classes.

First time skateboarder?

All abilities are welcome at our classes including complete beginners. Students are grouped by skill level where possible (and friends can skate together when class sizes allow). Our instructors will make your child feel welcome from the moment they arrive, and any nerves usually disappear once the wheels start rolling.

Do I need my own skateboard, helmet and padding?

Students are encouraged to bring their own skateboard and helmet to classes. If not, we have plenty of spare skateboards and helmets that can be used at no extra cost. Helmets must be worn during classes. Other padding is optional and is not provided. Students are generally very safe without extra padding, but we don't discourage use of them if children/parents prefer them to be worn.

How old does my child have to be to join Skate School?

Children aged 5 years old and up can join our classes. For children around this age, we may ask that the parent or caregiver can assist their child during classes under our guidance, and only if needed. If you have a super star skateboarder that is under 5 years old and would like to join our classes, please free to contact us to discuss.

Where can I buy a skateboard?

It’s important that a skateboard of suitable quality is used to ensure your child can learn to skate properly, safely, and enjoyably. Our very own Young Guns Skateboards or any of the selected range available in our online shop are made especially for children who are learning to skateboard.

Skateboards come in a range of shapes and sizes. However, below is a suggestion on what we think the ideal size is for skaters of different ages:

- 7.5 inches wide is the perfect size for younger skaters (age 4-9 years) and/or those skaters with smaller feet.
- 7.75 inches wide is the perfect size for skaters aged 8 - 13.
- 8.0 inches wide is the perfect size for skaters aged 10+

Otherwise, the most important tip for buying a skateboard is to make sure you purchase a skateboard from a skateboard store. Please avoid non skate-specific stores. Good stores to visit are Boardertown, Trainers, or Fallenfront. Mentioning the Young Guns Skate School may help too.

Feel free to email us at info@younggunsskateschool.co.nz if you would like any help.
