Frequently asked questions
Here's everything you need to know about our classes at Young Guns Skate School. If you have any questions that we haven't covered below, please feel free to Contact Us
What happens if it's raining?
If the weather is really bad on the day of a class, classes may be cancelled. If we do have to cancel a class, a text message will be sent out to all parents who have booked for that class one hour before the start of the class. If you have paid for that class already, you will be credited. Skatepark Tours will run in most conditions. Lunchtime classes are not credited unless we do not run a minimum of 6 classes in that term.
How to use credit.
If you have credit with us, an option to use this credit will appear when you next make a booking with us. Credit can be used at any time towards any Young Guns classes or Skatepark Tours.
First time skateboarder?
Students of all abilities are welcome at our classes, including beginners. Classes are split into groups where students will skate with those of a similar skill level (students are also welcome to be in the same group as friends). This is also dependent on the size of classes. Our instructors will make your child feel very welcome upon arrival and any nerves will disappear as soon as the wheels start rolling. As long as your child isn't better than us at skateboarding, then we can help!
Do I need my own skateboard, helmet and padding?
Students are encouraged to bring their own skateboard and helmet to classes. If not, we have plenty of spare skateboards and helmets that can be used at no extra cost. Helmets must be worn during classes. Other padding is optional and is not provided. While we don't discourage use of other padding if you prefer for your child to wear them, students are generally very safe without other padding.
Where can I buy a skateboard?
It's important that a skateboard of a suitable quality is used to be able to learn to skate properly and safely. Our very own Young Guns Skateboards or any of the selected range available in our online shop are made especially for children who are learning to skateboard. Skateboards come in a range of shapes and sizes. However, below is a suggestion on what we think the ideal size is for skaters of different ages:
- 7.5 inches wide is the perfect size for younger skaters (age 4-9 years) and/or those skaters with smaller feet.
- 7.75 inches wide is the perfect size for skaters aged 8 - 13.
- 8.0 inches wide is the perfect size for skaters aged 10+
Otherwise, the most important tip for buying a skateboard is to make sure you purchase a skateboard from a skateboard store. Good stores to visit are Bordertown, Trainers, Backdoor Surf n Skate or Fallenfront. Mentioning the Young Guns Skate School may help too.
Feel free to email us at info@younggunsskateschool.co.nz if you would like any help.

How old does my child have to be?
